This lamellaphone, or mbira, is played by grasping the box on either side, and using both thumbs (and sometimes the index fingers) to pluck the metal keys. For this reason it is also called a thumb piano. The Keys are attached to a sound resonator, either a hollow box, as in this case, or placed in an open large gourd to enhance the volume of sound.
