Different sections of the beach were reserved for men and women. Clearly Tomaso Filippi spared himself no trouble to photograph the men's section: his camera must have been standing in the water for this picture [Ritter, D., Venice in old photographs, 1841-1920; 1994 Calmann & King Ltd, p. 148]
