MUSEO CIVICO DI ASOLO

The Museum, as well as the Bishop's Palace, occupies the building of the Loggia della Ragione, built to accommodate minor Venetian representations and frescoed in the mid 16th century. The first nucleus of the museum collections was formed in the early 19th century with donations of the "Cenotaph of Domenico Canova Manera", cousin of Antonio Canova, and of the "Paride" of canoviana school by Giovan Battista Sartori Canova, half-brother of the famous sculptor. These works, for the beatification of the then Town Hall,  are still on display in the Sala della Ragione.

The Museum was officially established at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the bequests of Andrea Manera and Pacific Scomazzetto.

Since the beginning of the 20th century the donations will intensify, increasing considerably the artistic and historical heritage of the Institute.

The recent refurbishment of the Museum houses the archaeological section documenting the ancient origins of the city, the art gallery where paintings ranging from the 15th century to the contemporary era (including works by Luca Giordano, Bernardo Strozzi and Bernardo Bellotto), the SEC. Cornaro with paintings, documents and personal objects of the Queen, the SEC. Duse with scenic sketches, autograph letters, portraits and stage outfits of the divine and the SEC. of the Treasury of the Cathedral with extraordinary vestments which bear witness to the exceptional history of bishopric asolana. A totally new and multimedia section houses the collection of objects belonging to the English writer and traveler Freya Stark.

Part of the adjacent Museum historical archives where precious manuscripts, old maps, deeds and records documenting the history of the city since the 15th century.

Il Museo civico occupa, oltre che il palazzo del Vescovado, l’edificio della Loggia della Ragione, edificato per ospitare le rappresentanze minori veneziane e affrescato intorno alla metà del XVI secolo. Il primo nucleo delle collezioni museali si forma agli inizi dell’Ottocento con le donazioni del Cenotafio del Canova di Domenico Manera, cugino di Antonio Canova, e del Paride di scuola canoviana da parte di Giovan Battista Sartori Canova, fratellastro del famoso scultore. Tali opere, destinate all’abbellimento dell’allora Sala Consiliare del Municipio, sono tuttora esposte nella Sala della Ragione.

Il Museo viene istituito ufficialmente alla fine del XIX secolo, grazie ai lasciti di Andrea Manera e Pacifico Scomazzetto.

Dagli inizi del Novecento le donazioni si intensificano, incrementando considerevolmente il patrimonio artistico e storico dell’istituto.

Il Museo ospita la sezione archeologica che documenta le antiche origini della Città, la pinacoteca in cui sono esposti dipinti che vanno dal XV secolo all’età contemporanea (tra cui spiccano le opere di Luca Giordano, Bernardo Strozzi e Bernardo Bellotto), la sez. Cornaro con dipinti, documenti e oggetti personali della regina,  la sez. Duse con bozzetti scenografici, lettere autografe, ritratti e abiti di scena della Divina e la sez. del Tesoro della Cattedrale con straordinari paramenti sacri che testimoniano la storia eccezionale delle sede vescovile asolana.Una sezione totalmente nuova e multimediale ospita la collezione di oggetti appartenuti alla scrittrice e viaggiatrice inglese Freya Stark.

Fa parte del Museo anche l’adiacente Archivio Storico in cui preziosi manoscritti, antiche mappe, atti e registri documentano le vicende storiche della Città a partire dal XV secolo.
