CASA NATALE DI TIZIANO VECELLIO

The family home where Titian was born is a solid Cadore structure of the 15th century. Like all the buildings of the period it was a typical house of the higher middle class among whose members were persons of rank: notaries, timber merchants and public officials. The present house is the result of restructurings  commissioned by the Magnifica Comunità of the Cadore, owner of the building since 1926 to engineer Giuseppe Palatini, and carried out in the years 1928-30, with the demolition of the anterior part, the result of an enlargement done during the Sixteenth century  by its proprietors which had hidden the original façade. As a result of that intervention the ancient doors and windows of the original structure, of smaller dimensions typical of the Fifteenth century, came to light. The actual structure is composed of two levels of stone, irregularly designed, with covered porches, an exterior wooden stair and a two sided roof covered with wooden tiles. On the ground floor a wide room  houses the reproductions of the collection of Titian’s drawings whose originals are in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, as well as other documents relating to the painter. After  the steep wooden stairs, one gains access to the upper floor, where are the five interconnected spaces where Titian probably spent his youth and successively, after moving to Venice, each period he returned home. In these archaic structures the spirit of the artist still hovers: you can feel it in the kitchen with a large open stove (foghèr) covered by a  hood, the only heated room in the house, in the nearby utility room and  above all, in the warm closeness of the stua, with wood panelled walls and rough timbered ceiling. The emotions felt while stepping on those rickety floor planks or while walking those worn-out kitchen stones that had witnessed the birth of the Genius of Renaissance painting, are unforgettable.

La residenza familiare che vide venire alla luce il pittore Tiziano Vecellio è un solido edificio cadorino del XV secolo, in via Arsenale a Pieve di Cadore. All’epoca della costruzione rappresentava una dimora tipica di una famiglia locale distinta, che annoverava, tra i suoi componenti, personaggi di prestigio: notai, mercanti di legname, incaricati della gestione della cosa pubblica.
La situazione attuale invece è il risultato di interventi – commissionati dalla Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, proprietaria dal 1926 dell’immobile - all’ing. Giuseppe Palatini di Pieve di Cadore, ed eseguiti ancora nel 1928-30, con la demolizione dell’avancorpo anteriore, frutto di un ampliamento realizzato a metà del Settecento dai proprietari del tempo, che aveva avuto l’effetto di nascondere l’antica facciata. Con l’intervento di demolizione tornarono alla luce le antiche porte e finestre dell’edificio originario, aperture di dimensioni ridotte, peculiari del XV secolo. L’edificio odierno è composto da due piani in muratura, dalla planimetria irregolare, con ballatoi, scala esterna in legno e tetto a due falde con copertura a scàndole. Al pianterreno l’ampio locale con pavimento in legno a tronchetti ospita una raccolta di riproduzioni della collezione di disegni tizianeschi della Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze e documentazione relativa al Pittore. Al piano superiore cinque suggestivi vani dove probabilmente Tiziano visse l’infanzia e, successivamente - dopo il suo trasferimento a Venezia - ogni volta che faceva ritorno in patria. In questi ambienti arcaici aleggia ancora lo spirito dell’artista: lo si percepisce nella cucina con il grande foghér (focolare) e cappa, con annesso locale di servizio, nelle camere e soprattutto nell’intimo della stùa, foderata di legno e con il rustico soffitto a cassettoni.
