MUSEO "MONDONOVO MASCHERE"

Art Master Guerrino Lovato was born in Brendola (Vicenza). In 1983 he opened a workshop where he started creating and selling his renowned Venetian papier-mâché masks, used by famous film directors as Franco Zeffirelli, Stanley Kubrick and Kenneth Branagh as well as equipment for theatres and cinemas for which, over the years, he received orders from prestigious clients worldwide. Particularly worth-mentioning, are the two huge nativity scenes with mechanical automation ordered by the city of Paris; a 6 meter high Christ statue in the Michelangelo guise supplied to the Vatican; decorative sculptures for the Romanoff-guised remake of the large domes of the Cremlin; and all the drawings, maquettes and prototypes of the sculptures and ornamental bas reliefs of the cavea at the Venice Gran Teatro La Fenice.

In 2011, he decided to retire, and appointed the Municipality of Malo (Vicenza) as the virtual repository of his property endured to honour and save the value of art, culture, and traditions. For this reason, he moved his entire workshop to Palazzo Corielli including 250 works, 500 maquettes, an Archive-Library as well as numerous tools, antiques and ancient furniture: real heirlooms of the opera world of Del Monaco and Mascagni.

This prestigious workshop, now turned into a lively museum hosting a lot of different activities, was not moved by chance to Malo. It was rather a decision based on the strong lien between this town and the Italian Carnival, a traditional celebration that takes places every year with the parade of the famous carnival floats.

Guerrino Lovato, Maestro d’arte originario di Brendola (VI), nel 1983 apre a Venezia una bottega-laboratorio dove assieme alle sue celebri maschere veneziane di cartapesta, utilizzate da registri del calibro di Franco Zeffirelli, Stanley Kubrick e Kenneth Branagh, crea macchinerie per il teatro, l'opera e il cinema. Prestigiose le commissioni ricevute negli anni da ogni parte del mondo: due imponenti presepi con automi meccanici voluti dal Comune di Parigi, una statua del Cristo in stile michelangiolesco, alta 6 metri, per il Vaticano, i modelli in scultura per la decorazione nella ricostruzione delle grandi cupole in stile Romanoff per il Cremlino, e, ancora, i disegni e modelli di tutti i prototipi delle sculture e dei bassorilievi di ornato della cavea del Gran Teatro La Fenice di Venezia.

Deciso nel 2011 di chiudere l’attività e consapevole del valore artistico, culturale e di memoria acquisito nel tempo dal suo laboratorio, l’artista individua il Comune di Malo quale depositario ideale del suo patrimonio e trapianta integralmente a palazzo Corielli la sua famosissima bottega trasferendovi 250 opere, 500 matrici, una biblioteca- archivio, nonché strumenti di lavoro, oggetti e mobili antichi: cimeli originali del mondo dell’opera di Del Monaco e di Mascagni.

La scelta di Malo a sede della prestigiosa bottega –laboratorio, ora musealizzata, ma sempre viva grazie alle tante attività che vi si tengono, non è casuale. Essa poggia sul forte legame della cittadina con il Carnevale, tradizione che ogni anno si rinnova con le storiche sfilate dei carri allegorici.
