MUSEO ETNOGRAFICO DEGLI ZATTIERI DEL PIAVE

The aim of the museum is to illustrate all the aspects of the cutting, transport and transfer of great quantities of lumber, from the valleys of the province of Belluno toward Venice, along the river Piave, the most important mean of transport.  Another aspect that the museum intends to highlight is the use of floating to transport  other materials besides wood, like: carved stone, grindstones to sharpen the swords, the charcoal, processed minerals,  sulphuric acid and every product of the mountains that was useful to  the cities of the Venetian plain and to Venice itself, which lays its foundations on millions of trunks, coming from Belluno woods, stuck at the bottom of the lagoon. The makers of this huge transfer  (about  350.000 trunks per  year) were the “menadàs” and the “zattieri”.

The collections are made by  a complete harvest of the equipments once used to cut, transport and floating up to the sawmills. In particular, besides the old tools, the museum owns a sleigh for the transport of the trunks, models of the “risine”, of the “stue”, of the pile driver, of the “cidoli”, of the sawmills and many  models of rafts of Piave river among which the "raso" raft made with ship mastings. Of particular interest is the archaeological section, that aims to illustrate the evolution of man inside the creation and in regard to the use of plant cutting tools and their use and a search on the origins of the use of raft by men. The setting is completed by an ancient Venetian sawmill rebuilt on the forecourt of the museum.

The museum has been realized by the nephews of the ancient “zattieri”, who are the only ones who can remember how to tie the trunks and form great rafts, in order not to forget the work of their ancestors.

The museum is open from June to September from Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday) at the following times: 9-12/15-18. In the other months it is open only by appointment

Il museo si sviluppa su dieci sale e illustra tutti gli aspetti riguardanti il taglio, trasporto e trasferimento di grandi quantità di legname, durato secoli, fatto fluitare, prima liberamente e poi legato in zattere, dalle vallate della provincia di Belluno verso la pianura veneta e soprattutto verso Venezia, lungo quella che era la via maestra per i trasporti, il fiume Piave. Venezia appoggia le sue fondamenta su milioni di tronchi infissi sul fondo della laguna, provenienti in gran parte dai boschi del Bellunese. Il legname è servito altresì per la costruzione delle case dei palazzi e delle navi di Venezia. 

Artefici di questo gigantesco trasferimento, si parla di 350.000 tronchi l’anno, i menadàs e gli zattieri, in particolare gli zattieri di Codissago che costruivano le zattere subito a valle dei tredici grandi impianti di segheria che Venezia aveva costruito tra Perarolo e Venezia e due grandi impianti a Sedico lungo il Cordevole. Altro aspetto che s’intende altresì illustrare è l'uso della zattera per il trasporto di altri materiali oltre il legno, quali: la pietra lavorata, le mole per affilare le spade, la carbonella, i minerali lavorati e in pani, l'acido solforico e ogni prodotto della montagna che serviva alle città della pianura veneta e a Venezia.

Le collezioni sono costituite da una raccolta completa delle attrezzature che un tempo servivano al taglio, trasporto, fluitazione fino alle segherie, segagione del legname e successiva costruzione delle zattere. In particolare, oltre agli attrezzi usati un tempo dai boscaioli, dai carradori, dai menadàs, dai segantini e dagli zattieri, il museo possiede una slitta per il trasporto dei tronchi, modelli delle risine, delle stue, del battipalo, dei cidoli, delle segherie e numerosi modelli di zattere del Piave fra cui il "raso" zattera costituita da alberature delle navi.

Vi è altresì una serie di modelli di zattere dei fiumi Pirenaici, delle alpi francesi, della Foresta Nera e di Turingia, dei fiumi austriaci e una descrizione dei percorsi delle zattere per raggiungere i grandi porti dell'Europa dove si costruivano le flotte navali che hanno navigato su tutti i mari del mondo. Interessante la sezione archeologica, che intende illustrare l'evoluzione dell'uomo nella creazione e nell'uso degli attrezzi per il taglio delle piante e la loro utilizzazione e una ricerca sulle origini dell'utilizzazione della zattera da parte dell'uomo, il trasporto con zattere sul Piave al tempo dei romani 2000 anni fa. Un’antica segheria alla veneziana funzionante datata 1883 ricostruita sul piazzale del museo completa il quadro. Il Museo è anche Centro Internazionale di Studi sulle zattere che hanno navigato su tutti i fiumi del mondo.

Il museo è aperto da Giugno a Settembre dal martedì alla domenica (Lunedi chiuso) con il seguente orario: 9-12/15-18. Negli altri mesi è aperto su prenotazione
